Walk-On Saddle Net & Netting Balustrades, Northcote

Bespoke worked with Austin Maynard Architects to deliver a custom walk-on saddle net and balustrade infills for a residence in Northcote. The project required structural steel, precise templating, and rope-edged netting, with detailing designed to integrate seamlessly into the architecture.

Location: Clarke St, Northcote, VIC

When: February 2023

Architect: Austin Maynard Architects

Our Scope

Design, engineering, supply, and installation of custom walk-on saddle nets and netting balustrades for a residential property in Northcote.

The walk-on net was designed to act as both a functional floor element and a visual feature, suspended within a double-height void to create a safe and flexible living space. The adjacent netted balustrades provided compliant fall protection while maintaining visual openness between levels.

The system was tailored to suit the existing structure, with precise anchoring to timber framing and stainless steel perimeter cables to ensure consistent tension and load performance.

These installations were completed to:

  • Create a safe, load-bearing walk-on net for recreational use

  • Deliver compliant fall protection across mezzanine and stair voids

  • Maintain architectural transparency and connection between spaces

  • Achieve a refined, minimal aesthetic through bespoke detailing and tensioning
