Bespoke Wire & Rope delivered a 4mm trellis cable façade and Flexi-mesh entrance canopy for the Amphibian & Reptile Conservation Centre at Taronga Zoo. Detailed engineering ensured compliance and seamless integration with the steel structure, supported by Arcus Wire Group’s cable supply. Despite challenging site conditions, our team completed the installation safely and efficiently, achieving a durable and refined finish.

Location: Taronga Zoo, Mosman NSW

Completion Date: April 2024

Client: Taronga Zoo

Builder: Stephen Edwards Constructions

Architect: DWP (Design Worldwide Partnership)

Our Scope

Bespoke Wire & Rope was engaged to design, engineer, supply, and install two key elements for the new Amphibian & Reptile Conservation Centre at Taronga Zoo. The first was a series of 4mm stainless steel trellis cables forming a vertical façade system to support climbing plants, creating a living green surface for the building. The second was a Flexi-mesh canopy installed at the main entrance, providing a strong, transparent barrier that complements the architectural design while maintaining visitor safety.

Each element required detailed structural analysis to confirm the reactions and forces imposed on the supporting steelwork. We worked closely with the architect, client, and fabricator to incorporate fixing cleats before galvanising and painting, ensuring a neat, long-term solution. The installation demanded careful planning due to the sloping site and active pedestrian access throughout the zoo. Supported by Arcus Wire Group’s Sydney factory, which manufactured and delivered the cables, our team was able to deliver both scopes to a high standard, combining technical precision with a refined architectural finish.

These systems were installed to:

  • Provide a durable and visually refined trellis façade for climbing plants

  • Deliver a safe and transparent Flexi-mesh canopy at the main entrance

  • Ensure structural performance through detailed engineering and coordination

  • Maintain the design integrity with neat, integrated fixing details

This project highlights Bespoke’s ability to integrate tensile systems into complex architectural environments, balancing technical demands with seamless visual outcomes.
